About Orifice Flanges
Orifice Flanges are vital components designed to work with orifice meters to measure the flow rate of liquids or gases in pipelines. These flanges are equipped with pairs of pressure “tappings” machined directly into their surface, usually on opposite sides. This eliminates the need for separate orifice carriers or additional pipe wall tappings.
Available with Raised Faces or Ring Type Joint (RTJ) facings, Orifice Flanges are structurally similar to weld neck and slip-on flanges but include additional machining for specialized functionality.
In typical applications, Orifice Flanges are paired with an Orifice Plate and a machined jackscrew. The jackscrew simplifies maintenance by allowing easy separation of the flanges for inspection or replacement of the Orifice Plate and gaskets.
Product Range and Features
Our Orifice Flanges are offered in all standard sizes and pressure classes, manufactured using a variety of commonly used flange materials. They are available in Weld Neck, Slip-On, and Threaded designs. Typically, these flanges are supplied with 2 1/2″ NPT tappings on each flange for enhanced versatility and compatibility.
Thread Connection – NPT
The American National Pipe Thread Tapered (NPT) connection is a widely recognized standard, providing both mechanical and hydraulic sealing. NPT threads are tapered and require Teflon® tape or a jointing compound to ensure a leak-proof seal.
- Standard: ASME B1.20.1 covers dimensions and gauging for general-purpose NPT pipe threads.
- Orifice Flange Dimensions: ASME B16.36 defines dimensions and tolerances for orifice flanges, including orifice pressure differential connections. These standards apply to:
- Welding Neck: Classes 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, 2500
- Slip-On: Class 300
- Threaded: Class 300
