About Slip-On Flanges

A slip-on flange, commonly referred to as an SO flange, is designed to slide over a pipe, featuring an internal diameter slightly larger than the pipe itself. This design allows the flange to fit snugly over the pipe, enabling direct connection to equipment or piping via fillet welds at the top and bottom. The primary function of a slip-on flange is to insert the pipe into its inner hole, providing a secure and reliable connection.

Types of Slip-On Flange Welding

Slip-on flanges can be categorized into two main types: Slip-On Welding Plate Flange and Slip-On Welding Neck Steel Pipe Flange. These flanges exhibit mechanical properties that lie between those of lap joint flanges and integral flanges. Their straightforward structure and ease of processing make slip-on flanges widely utilized in various fluid pipeline applications.

Depending on specific requirements, slip-on flanges can also feature different face types, such as ring type joint (RTJ) and raised face types, enhancing their versatility for various piping applications.

Raised Face Slip-On Flange

The raised face slip-on flange features a small protrusion from the bottom face of the flange, serving as a seat for a gasket during installation. This design improves sealing performance, with the height of the raised face increasing with pressure ratings to ensure optimal sealing under varying conditions.

RTJ Slip-On Flange

The raised face section of the slip-on flange may include a small machined groove, known as the Ring Type Joint (RTJ). This groove serves as a seat for a gasket ring, essential for effective sealing.
